The World´s First Freedom of Information Act celebrated 2 Dec 2006

The year 2006 is important in the history of democracy. It is the 100th Anniversary of General Suffrage in Finland: women were given full political rights for the first time in the world. This year is also the 240th Anniversary of the world´s first Freedom of Information legislation, adopted in Sweden-Finland. Enlightment thinker and politician Anders Chydenius (1729-1803) played a crucial role in creating this Act that abolished political censorship and provided public with an access to government documents (2 December 1766).

The 240th Anniversary of the Freedom of Information will be celebrated on 2 December 2006. The Anders Chydenius Foundation will publish the first FOI Act in English as well as an article on the political process giving birth to this historical legislation. The Foundation will also awake discussion on the Anders Chydenius legacy in the contemporary world. An international seminar on EU"s transparency challenges will be organised on 1 December in Helsinki, in cooperation with the European Movement.
