Foundation reminded Finnish EU Presidency about "freedom of information"

Anders Chydenius Foundation congratulated Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen and Minister for Justice Leena Luhtanen for the priority of the Finnish EU Presidency to increase the transparency of the European Union. In their letter of 29 June, Chairman Gustav Björkstrand (Finland) and Vice-Chairman Sverker Gustavsson (Sweden) urged the Finnish EU Presidency to open the ministerial meetings of the Council as broadly as possible and to promote public access to EU documents. At the same time, they reminded about the 240th Anniversary of the oldest "freedom of information" legislation of the world, initiated by Anders Chydenius (1729-1803).

Public access to EU documents

One of Finland"s objectives is to develop European regulation on public access to documents. Finland will prepare for the publication of a Commission Discussion Paper on the revision of the Regulation regarding public access to European Parliament, Council and Commission documents during the year. Finland is also taking steps to promote discussion on the issue during its Presidency.

Webcasts of Council meetings has started

December 2005 saw the adoption of conclusions aimed at increasing the transparency of Council discussions on legislative activities in particular. Finland proposes that Council sessions on all key issues and matters of interest to citizens be made public. Finland aims to broadcast all public Council sessions on the Internet.
